Merteaser Mertuesday: The Merman Problem

Posted on June 15, 2010 by Phoebe 17 Comments

Today’s teaser explains some of the mechanics and biology of my mermaids. I have to admit that I winced a bit when I read this excerpt from Hannah Moskowitz’s blog from her current work-in-progress, which also features a merman, and raises similar questions of biology. But, hell, if you’re writing about mermen that do it, you really have to address the Mermaid Problem!

That would be the most awkward conversation ever to have with someone LOL. But I like how you dealt with it! (I'd have to ask, too.)

  • I'm with Kaitlin. You dealt with the question (I think we'd all feel compelled to ask) well. great tease!

  • Liz Page says:

I just love the twist you've put on it, that he'll have to chose one day and he wants to meet his dad first. So cool. I want thisss :)

And Hurley is from Lost? I don't watch Lost but the rest of the world does lol. Guh, I'm going to have to change that.

  • Phoebe says:

Thanks guys–I'm glad I'm not the only perv who would wonder!

Liz, this is Hurley on LOST. Probably not what you had in mind!

  • Becca says:

Is it bad that I wondered the same thing? lol

This convo definitely put a smile on my face. Keep at this one. :)

  • Jaimie says:

I love love love this. You ARE querying this novel right now, right?

  • Phoebe says:

Jaimie: I wish! It's only three quarters done and I want to give it a good, solid thrashing editing before I start sending it out. My goal is to query by August, but that might be overly optimistic.

    Thanks, though :D

  • Ellen says:

This is great!!! I love it :D You get her past the "denial" stage pretty quick, which is good, cause that can get old fast for readers, I think. And the dialogue is really funny. I also love the description of his tail, more like a dolphin's, I never pictured a mermaid tail that way! … Or merman, I suppose.

  • Jaimie says:

Cool. I hear ya on the editing. I need to figure out how to STOP editing.

  • Kate says:

YES. A paranormal where the characters actually ask the questions we're all thinking!

I have to admit, though, merman always makes me think of this for a second. But your snip got me past it!

  • Phoebe says:

Haha, Kate, you and my husband, both. Every time I talk about my book (which, to be fair, is too often), my husband stops me and says "MerMAN, dad, merMAN!"

  • Bri says:

Heh, what an awkward conversation done in such a cute way :) I always enjoy the teasers from this, and today's is no exception!

  • Sage says:

LOL, I like the end. "I'm a mammal too." And her looking and being all self-conscious about it

  • Patrick says:

"This brings up another thing about mermaids. Since they have breasts, that makes them sea-mammals. However, sea-mammals typically need a considerable amount of fat for health, whereas mermaids are typically portrayed as being very slim"

Dude, you HAVE to make your mermaids totally, totally fat.

  • Ellen says:

    P.S. – I gave you a blog award :D

  • Janice says:

I draw mermaids a lot and they're always really fierce and feral looking. I never really thought about them having sex, I guess I figured it would be more of a Futurama kind of thing where the woman fish deposits her eggs and the man fish swims over them and ejaculates.

  • Akin says:

Lol great teaser and funny too. But I gotta say, mermaids? That's the rave now? The new vamps? hahahaha!
