Teaser Tuesday: Oh my god, guys, I'm hyper!

Oh my God, guys!

I have been incredibly busy!

As you know, I recently moved. And so we’ve been getting settled, constructing Swedish furniture, reducing the number of cardboard boxes that surround us.

And, on top of that, I’ve been writing!

In fact, I finished the first draft of SEAS RUN DRY! (Final word count, 74,000 and change. Final word? “Water.” Amount of coffee I have recently consumed? Tons!)

I figured that I should use this small stretch of unemployment to good use. And rumor has it that a certain rockstar agent is still looking for mermaid books. So I’m marching forward! Spending lots and lots of time at my computer. Writing first, editing now.

And you know what? It’s going well. It’s going really well. I feel so much happier with this manuscript, as a draft, then I have with my other, previous, shelved/trunked books. I think I’m learning. What a novel concept!

I’m going to be sending this draft to some people for quick-and-dirty betaing soon, hopefully in the next day or so, but definitely by the end of this week. Tee and Jaimie and Michele and probably Pat (and maybe Elizabeth?) are already on my list. If you think you might be down for a read-through and feedback session, let me know. I’m happy to share, and have time to crit other work right now, too. So get in touch! E-mail’s in the sidebar.

Anyway, it’s Tuesday. You know what that means! I’ve found a sliver of SEAS RUN DRY that I can share without significant spoilers. Even better, it relates to a few of my central themes: choice, and parents. Namely, how parents have the potential to fuck you up, Phil Larkin style. Though in this excerpt, they’re not all bad. Irene’s dad is trying, at least.

(Teaser removed)

Stay tuned tomorrow for Qwery Qwednesday.

I read about half of that and then I thought, "No. No." I want to read it in context, darn you. Because I'm gonna get to pretty soon (hurray!), otherwise I would finish it. But I love the flavor of it so far, the blending of fantasy and reality like that. I can't wait to read the ms!

(P.S. I was wondering how you had my email address for the longest until just now, filling out this comment form. Duh.)

I'm guilty of judging a book by its cover! Somehow I'd made an assumption of some sort about you from your spazzy (and fun!) twitter. I'm quite impressed with your writing! Glad I pushed you to finish faster cause I'm ready to read this one! ;)

Ha, yeah, I've been pretty frenetic on twitter, but it's not generally representative of my writing. Which is kind of dark? I can't write funny, for better or for worse.

But thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Patrick says:

Phoebe, in that photo you look exactly the way I imagine a person who writes mermaid novels looks like.

  • Phoebe says:

Hella wired, Pat, and possibly psychotic?

  • Patrick says:

Plus drinkin moonshine out of a drinkin jar.

  • Jaimie says:

It didn't spook me. I just thought, "Wow. She's good." A lot of stuff can be inferred (or googled) nowadays. :)

  • I just love Loril…he is so cool and just out there enough to have me sitting up and taking notice. MORE PLEASE!!!

  • angie says:

I like the thing he says about the Kenny kid – most guys would think that would impress, but this daddy's tough!! Nice tease.

  • Nice tease! I liked the bits about the pipe smoke – very nice touches to texturize the scene. :)

  • michele says:

Yaaay! I'm so looking forward to "diving into" this. Ha ha. Bad pun. :)

  • Elsa says:

congratulations on finishing the manuscript! That's such a marvelous feeling!

I, too, stopped reading partway through, because I want to get the full flavor when I read the book. Really looking forward to it!
