Holy Busy October, Batman!
Happy belated Hallowe’en, from your friend the Doctor (and his friend, the Doctor)!
If you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to, the answer is: busy busy busy. Here’s what I wrote this month:
- At the Intergalactic Academy, I interviewed Karen Sandler, and wrote about the teens of Terra Nova.
- Also at the Intergalactic Academy, I reviewed Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, Circus Galacticus by Deva Fagan, Crossed by Ally Condie, and The Always War by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
- At YA Highway, I wrote about my evolving attitudes toward workshop feedback.
- The Young Adult Review Network featured my short story, “Elsie and the Wild Boys.”
- And I wrote my first fanfic in a decade, “The Honeymoon of River Song.”
Yes, I’m a dork. Had you ever any doubt?

I'm going to be bitterly disappointed if they don't use the Doctor Phoebe in the Snow photo as your author picture.
Bitterly disappointed, I say.
I'm with Sean.
I'll keep that in mind, guys. It is, by far, the best picture Jordan's ever taken of me. I mean, the snow! the glower! the bowtie!
Adorable! Or maybe I mean "adorkable." Whatevs. I'm just tickled pink by the notion of a Doctor-on-Doctor excursion.
I'm a newcomer to The Doctor, and you, Phoebe, were the key who unlocked his secrets for me. This Metafilter comment (and the exchange leading up to it) persuaded me to give "Doctor Who" another try.
Before that exchange, the few episodes I'd watched had left me a bit cold — and also perplexed, because the franchise seemed to fall into the sweet spot where all my nerdery converges. But your comment — or the first half, anyhow* — convinced me to give "Doctor Who" another try, and I am completely sold. We've been watching it in order on DVD, and I am smitten.
*I haven't read all of your excellent advice for fear of spoiling some elements for myself, but soon I'll revisit it; we've watched everything up to "Silence in the Library," which you mention as the episode that convinced you.
Aww . . . I'm so happy I helped get you into it, Elsa! My husband still laughs about how I didn't like it at first. Meanwhile, I spent today painting a blue bag to look like a TARDIS to go with my costume for a con we're going to.
I'd be curious to see what you think of River once you're all caught up. She's been a really controversial figure for a lot of female fans.
